PCPL Intranet

Pima County Public Library Intranet

Launch Date: 1-15-2008
Address: http://libstaff.library.pima.gov (not publicly-accessible)
Size: Dynamic content
Work: All design and development

The Pima County Public Library created the web developer role for me in 2007 to complete this project. The intranet was an broad tool that would foster social networks within the library system, replace an unorganized mess of a file share server, and replace inefficient and outdated internal processes. Major components to the intranet included a content management system (built from scratch, using FCK Editor for a back-end WYSIWYG), a "Wiki" (although this was more a segment of the CMS than a real wiki), a Facebook-style commenting system and customizable news feed complete with notifications, a document management database complete with versioning, customized homepages for each branch department and individual, a user database partially connected with Active Directory, a news and event management system.
The intranet was written in PHP with SQL Server as a back-end. It was initially launched with only a few of the above components and was gradually added on to in the form of large module releases throughout 18 months, which introduced several new features at a time. Staff training for its use was done (by me) at several sessions throughout the library's district (Pima County, Arizona; 9,188.83 square miles) which involved event coordination, travel and course design.

The MLS Search uses nightly server-side Cron jobs to download via FTP zip files containing pictures and text related to current residential listings.
